Summer reading helps us SOAR!

Parents, help your child avoid reading regression this summer. Here are some ideas:
Encourage your children to read books they enjoy for at least 30 minutes per day. Your child will likely be more engrossed in material they choose themselves than material that is forced on them.
Provide incentives for reluctant readers. For example, if your child enjoys basketball, agree to take them to the local court if they do their “daily reading.”
Make reading a social act. Establish a time during the day when all members of the family gather and read on their own, or take turns reading the same book aloud.
Connect your reading to family outings. If you take your kids to an aquarium, consider reading a book about fish or the ocean with them later that day. The outing can help place the reading into a broader context.

Sanchez is an AVID Certified School! We received our certification in 2017. Second and fourth grade students and teachers are using technology to enrich learning. Each second grade classroom got a set of IPads and Chromebooks to increase student access to technology. The teachers have been training with other 2nd grade teachers throughout the district to learn about ways to best support their students. Jackie Nguyen, one of our 2nd grade teachers, was selected and is one of the district trainers. Our fourth grade students received an IPAD for each student to use throughout the day. Students are creating presentations and use other academic tools to enrich their learning.

Cyber Safety Alert!

There is an app out there known as Ogle that everyone needs to be aware of. Essentially, Ogle is an app that allows anyone to “anonymously” post anything that they want about any school they choose – including ours. Schools across the nation are reporting inappropriate posts on Ogle that vary between cyber bullying of other students, nudity and drug use photos being published and shaming of classmates, administrators and staff. There are other apps out there like this; however, Ogle seems to be the most popular right now.

We are asking for parents to take steps to ensure that their students do not have the Ogle app on their phone, and that they do not access it. We are also asking parents to have discussions with their students about using the internet and social media websites appropriately.

Please click the headline for a link to a great video about the Ogle app that includes important steps that both parents and students should take to protect themselves from it.

Please contact us if you have any questions.
